The best chance to find gold in streams and placer deposits is to know where the occurrence of gold has been found. Before you dig or pan for gold in the stream deposits, you will need a map to show you where to look. These gold maps provide you with past and active gold mines, placers and claims. The venture will be interesting and challenging. When you do make a gold find it will be very exciting especially with the price of gold at an all time high. In the past, it was not uncommon for one to find 1 to 10 ounce nuggets in placer deposits and stream deposit. Those days may be gone, but who knows, maybe with some luck you could find a gold nugget.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 1:250000 SCALE BASE GOLD MAPS AND 1:100000 SCALE DETAIL GOLD MAPS?
THESE ARE TWO DIFFERENT USGS MAPS AND WERE MADE AT DIFFERENT TIMES. USUALLY THE 1:100000 SCALE MAPS ARE MORE RECENT.
The 1:250,000 scale gold map, about 1'' = 4 miles, define an area covering 1 degree of latitude and 2 degrees of longitude or a 1 x 2 grid map. The extent of topography shown includes primary roads, creeks, rivers, mountain ranges, major cities and towns. The gold sites shown on these maps show where the gold has been found in general locations. This is adequate to find streams or prospect areas when the gold is not clustered in a certain vicinity. When is is apparent that you may not find the gold site in certain areas where the gold is clustered a more detailed gold map is required.
The 1:100,000 scale gold map, about 1'' = 1.6 miles, defines and area of 1/2 degree (30 minutes) latitude and 1 degree (60 minutes) of longitude or a 30' x 60' grid. 4 of these maps show the same area as shown on the base gold map with a 1:250,000 scale. However, a lot more detail is shown on the 1:100,000 scale map which includes secondary roads, smaller creeks and rivers, smaller towns and cities and jeep trails and hiking trails. Section, township and ranges are defined on this map. (You will need the section, township and ranges if you want to file a claim or find out if a claim exists on a prospect or gold panning area.) Contours are shown in more detail along the creeks, allowing you to estimate the creek slopes and find areas where the creeks flatten out. Gold deposits occur at creek bends and places where the creek flattens out.
